Film noir is a term used to describe a distinctive genre of movies, primarily originating in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, although its influence can be traced both before and after this period. The term "film noir" is French for "black film" which aptly reflects the genre's characteristic dark and moody visual style as well as its often morally complex and sinister narratives.
